
Relax is the buzzword in August. Most of the wine-related activities this month are music festivals that help to incorporate our favourite beverage as part of our leisure time. Large parts of the country are on holiday mood this month, but there are still places in Spain where wine lovers can go to taste and enjoy good wines, such as Sanlúcar, where Taberna der Guerrita continues with its spectacular wine tasting programme, or Valenciso in Rioja.
2-31 August. Dealbariza wine store in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (San Juan, 6) presents a full line-up of tastings during this month with producers from the Sherry region and local wines set in historical context by the historian Manuel Perodi. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in August. The terrace of the winery Martín Codax in the Salnés Valley hosts a new edition of As Tardes do Atlántico, where various national chefs present Galician products served with Martín Códax wines. Likewise, chefs, sommeliers and other professionals will conduct, every Wednesday, tastings of white wines from various regions and styles, such as Chardonnays from France with Eduardo Camiña or Jerez with Mercedes González. Until 6 August. The Fiesta del Albariño, which takes place in Cambados (Pontevedra) since 1953, is a popular event with pop concerts, dancing parties and circus and magic attractions. Although the fiesta has turned to more leisurely activities away from wine, there is still a chance to taste Albariños in the Professional Wine Tunnel, a tasting room sponsored by the Rías Baixas appellation. The last day of the festival sees the announcement of the winning wine among all those competing.
3-20 August. As part of its summer experiences, Valenciso in Rioja hosts several activities this month such as storytelling with Carles García and María Marrodan (3 and 10 August), a guided tour of Ollauri and a night-time visit to the winery with Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso (12 August), a tasting of great white wines with Luis Vida (17 August) and a charity concert under the stars (20 August). 4-7 August. El Festival de Vino de Somontano is held in Barbastro (Huesca) in northern Spain and includes concerts, dancing, comedy shows and tapas tastings as well as Somontano wine tastings, winery visits and a tasting workshop for young people with Santi Rivas, of Colectivo Decantado (4th, 18:00). 5 y 12 August. For the sixth consecutive year, Divendres Divins brings together six Catalan appellations in an initiative that combines wine and music. This month begins at Pradell de la Teixeta with wines from DO Montsant and the presence of Guillem Anguera and Xavier Pie on stage and ends on August 12th at Arnes with Joe Juanós. 5-27 August. 6 August. Rectoral de San Eusebio hosts a musical evening with the soprano Chantal Garsán and the piano maestro Manuel Valencia in the vineyards of Adega Ferreiros in Coles (Ourense). 7-17 August. The Patio de la Tonelería or bodega Las Copas at González Byass in Jerez will host a new edition of Tío Pepe Festival, featuring some eternal glories in the national and international music scene such as Sara Baras, Plácido Domingo, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Kool & The Gang and Jorge Drexler. Gastronomy will be represented by the restaurants Cenador de Amos (1st), Cañabota (12th) and pop-up chefs such as Pedro Nolasco, Avanico and Gatxupa from Donosti. Tickets can be purchased from €19.
9 August. The I International Wine Fair of Lumbrales will bring to this small village in Salamanca with a long-standing wine-growing tradition a handful of producers from nearby districts such as Dominio del Noveno and Inma Vadillo Viticultora (both from S. Felices de los Gallegos), Pedro Gajate (Sobradillo), the event organisers Corazón Continto (Lumbrales), Viña Romana (Villariño de los Aires), Almaroja and Hato y Garabato (Vinos del Sayago) and Maritavora, from the Portuguese Raia. 10-14 August. Holiday makers and visitors in Castilla y León can check out Sonorama in Aranda de Duero. This music festival will have on stage 150 indie bands such as Badlands, C Tangana, Def Con Dos, Dorian, Izal, Amaia, Ladilla Rusa, La Casa Azul, Los Gandules, Ginebras or Jeanette, among others. there will be tastings of Ribera del Duero wines to be held at the underground cellar of Centro Cultural Caja de Burgos. 13 August. Ribeiro Son de Viño, an event combining music and wine from Ribeiro, is usually held in July but this year, organizers have scheduled a new date in Baiona. Festival goers will be able to taste wines from Ribeiro and listen to bands such as Josele Santiago y David Krahe, Rubén Por, Club del Río, Dani and Cora Velasco at Parador de Baiona while drinking wines from this appellation. 18-21 August. The festival Esférica Rioja Alavesa, held in the region for the second year, includes performances in venues as diverse as Villa Lucía, the Patio de las Escuelas and Bodegas Ysios in Laguardia or the church of San Andrés and Bodegas Marqués de Riscal in Elciego. Artists such as Elena Setién, Iván Ferreiro, Tanxugueiras or Mon Laferte and Los Mejillones Tigre with Ángel Carmona, among others, will be on stage. There will also be exhibitions, themed tastings and a gastronomic area. There will be a bus to move between the different venues. Tickets from €22.
24 August. The winery Viña Costeira celebrates the Costeira Sonora festival at the Pazo de Toubes with artists such as La, La Love You, Los Vinagres and Indomable. Time: 17:00- 01:00 Price: €35 Buses will leave to and from Ourense and Ribadavia.
25 August. DO Tarragona and restaurant Tem in Cambrils (Diputació, 64) present Vins de Platja, a wine fair to try 30 wines from this appellation as well as a paired dinner. Time: 20:00 Price: €50
25 - 28 August. Bodegas Franco-Españolas in Logroño hosts a new edition of Muwi Rioja Fest, a festival with indie Spanish bands such as Rigoberta Bandini, León Benavente, La La Love You or Lagartija Nick, among others. As well as concerts, festival-goers will be able to visit the winery, take part in tastings of Tempranillo and Garnacha, lunchtime vermouth, a photo exhibition, foodtrucks, Rioja food tastings and children’s play area. From 26 August. Sixteen bodegas in Penedès present La Verema del Cava with various activities such as concerts among vines, country breakfasts, bicycle routes in the countryside, brunch and lunch in the vineyards, dinner under the stars, nordic walking in rural paths and children's activities. Throughout August. Adda Gallery, inside the Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, in partnership with Campo Viejo presents an exhibition by Brazilian artist Fefe Talavera and an online virtual reality experience consisting of a 360° immersion through the vineyards of the winery in Rioja. A mural created by 3TTMAN (Louis Lambert) and inspired by Campo Viejo and Ibiza itself will also be on display, as well as the creation of a live mural by artist NANO4814 and two creative workshops on Campo Viejo bottles.
