Two wines from Puro Rofe

Puro Rofe has brought a terroir-driven approach to Lanzarote, a volcanic island at the eastern tip of the Canary archipelago where wine growing is something of a miracle. They produce contrasting styles working with different grape varieties and distinctive sites  which are featured on their labels.

Malvasia is the white variety that everyone expects from Lanzarote. Tilama 2023 comes from a site close to the sea. Vines are grown on limestone soils covered with rofe, the black ash found in much of the island. This is a floral, herbal wine with a citrus character over some warm soil notes that enhance the fruit. It offers a striking aromatic power that fills the palate and persists with remarkable length.

Juan Bello 2022 is another story. It comes from the inland area of the same name, which is also the name of a volcano. These are traditional vineyards with mixed grape varieties directly pressed and fermented together as a field blend: Malvasía, Listán Blanco, Vijariego and even some red Listán Negro, which gives the wine a tinge of colour. The wine feels free and easy, with vibrant acidity  and a note of lime on the finish. It is surprisingly fresh,  given the island’s scorching weather.

Thinking of Christmas, Juan Bello could be the perfect ‘vin de soif’ to welcome family and friends (it doesn't have to be all bubbles), whereas the aromatic power of Tilama deserves to be in the spotlight alongside a main course.

In both cases, the production is limited to fewer than 2,000 bottles priced at around €35.
