
Most wine events this month involve fizz, an unjustifiably seasonal style that drives consumption and sales in December. As well as bubbly, there is the odd festival or special event, like the tasting of VDP wines with Pedro Ballesteros MW which promises to be very interesting as the debate over the usefulness of DOs is a hot topic right now in Spain. 2 December. Coinciding with the miners’ festivity, Santa Bàrbara, producers in Bellmunt and les Solanes del Molar, among them Mas d’en Gil, Costers del Priorat or Casa Gran del Siurana, present Tast de Santa Bàrbara, an annual fair where local producers show their wines in Bellmunt (Priorat). There will be a screening of the film Grand Cru (11:00) followed by the tasting (12:30). Time: 11:00 - 18:30

5-9 December. The Basque capital Vitoria hosts Ardoaraba, an annual wine tasting event with local txakoli and wines from Rioja Alavesa —plus guests DO Cava and Rías Baixas— paired with local pintxos at marquees dotted around the city centre. There will be tastings at some leading tourist attractions in town as well as shops and bars. In order to try the wines, visitors need to purchase a set of tickets (€15) which include a glass and can then be exchanged for wines and pintxos in the marquees and participant bars across town.
6 December. Fintan Kerr, aka Wine Cuentista, hosts “Fintan’s Fridge”, an eclectic mix of some top-end wines that he does every six months. This month's selection features Bodega Leirana Finca Genoveva Albariño 2016, Gini Soave Vechie Vigne 2014, Badenhorst Family Red Blend 2015, La Sena 2013, MdM Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2007 and Domaine Schoffit Sommerberg Riesling 2000. Wine expert and communicator Juancho Asenjo will today be at Vinoteca La Laguna Gran Hotel (Tenerife) alongside sommelier Rasa Strankauskaite presenting a tasting of eight top-class wines sourced from the monasteries in Burgundy to Santiago de Compostela. Food consultancy Tándem Gastronómico in Valencia presents a tasting of long ageing sparkling wines that will be conducted by sommelier Eva Pizarro and Toni Pérez, sommelier at Bodegas Gramona, one of the country’s leading producers of this style of bubbly. 11 December. Enoteca Barolo (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) in Madrid joins in the Christmas spirit with a tasting of vintage Champagnes made with Chardonnay and led by Juanma Ruiz Casado. Sharon Grundy, who runs The Spanish Wine School in Barcelona, hosts a tasting that she has named Festive Tipples of Europe and Wines for Celebrations, a one-off festive Special tasting some of the seasonal drinks enjoyed around Europe, discovering their origins, stories and sampling their finest examples. In terms of the wines, the selection includes some top sparkling bargains to the perfect wines for roast meats, not forgetting something to pair with the cheese board and dessert.
