Online wine retail companies Decántalo and Bodeboca agree merger

While much of Spain enjoys the summer holidays, Decántalo and Bodeboca have announced their merger, creating the largest online wine retail group in the country and one of the leading players in Europe.

On 1 August, all suppliers of both companies received a joint statement confirming the deal —a major development in the online wine trade and a step towards consolidating wine distribution both nationally and across Europe.

More details about the transaction and its impact on the structure and management of the two businesses will be revealed in September. However, according to sources familiar with the deal, both brand names are expected to be retained, although teams will likely be coordinated to streamline costs and operations.

Founded in Barcelona in 2009 by Oriol Ripoll and Héctor Pla, Decántalo entered into a partnership in 2022 with Le Petit Ballon, a French wine subscription platform with over 150,000 annual customers and part of the family-owned COGIP group. Since joining forces with Le Petit Ballon, the Barcelona-based company has continued to post double-digit growth. Decántalo has extensive international experience and is currently active in more than 35 countries. It offers over 10,000 wines and sells nearly two million bottles annually, with a turnover approaching €20 million.

Bodeboca was launched in Madrid in late 2010 by French entrepreneurs Greg Bulckaert and Nathanaël Berbessou. A pioneer in introducing the online private sale model for wine, the company was acquired by global drinks giant Pernod Ricard in 2019. At the time of the acquisition, Bodeboca offered more than 6,000 wines from 1,500 wineries and had over one million registered members, primarily in Spain. Its current annual turnover is estimated at around €15 million.
