Cabernet and Chardonnay
We are giving away two of Jean Leon's flagship wines
60 years in the heart of Penedès
Happy birthday
Jean Leon celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023 and we want to share the occasion with the readers of Spanish Wine Lover. We are giving away two of the estate's flagship wines: the Cabernet that was launched when the winery was founded, and its Chardonnay. The first wine is Vinya Le Havre Reserva 2013, a special release to mark the occasion. The second is the current vintage of the white Vinya Gigi. Both wines come in a luxury book-style box, in keeping with the novel-like biography of the founder.
Single-vineyard wines
Located in the heart of the Penedès region in Catalonia, this was the first winery in the appellation to obtain Vino de Finca status, the equivalent of a Grand Cru. The château concept was adopted by its founder, Ceferino Carrión, later known as Jean Leon, when he bought the property in 1963 and planted French grape varieties. He is credited with creating the first modern single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain, in the 1969 vintage. The current owners, Familia Torres, have kept this spirit alive and have expanded the range of wines to include blends and indigenous varieties.
From Hollywood to the White House
Jean Leon opened a restaurant in Hollywood called La Scala with actor James Dean. The place became very popular with film stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and Fred Astaire. Leon named his first vineyard after his famous restaurant. He named the Chardonnay after his daughter Gigi, and a later vineyard after the French port he stowed away from in pursuit of the American dream: Le Havre. Ronald Reagan chose a 1975 La Scala for his swearing-in dinner at the White House.
