This small winery on the north coast of Menorca was founded by the six Martínez Jover brothers on 110 hectares of land inherited from their grandfather. Having once focused on cereal and milk production, they abandoned cattle farming but realised how quickly the land was degrading. So they decided to look for a Mediterranean crop that would meet the constraints imposed by their location in the S'Albufeira d'Es Grau Nature Reserve.
Inspired by the detailed writings of Archduke Louis Salvador of Austria on the Balearic Islands and the role played by wine during the English domination of Menorca, they decided to plant vines and chose a grape variety with a special importance in the Mediterranean region: Malvasía. Six dry-farmed hectares of this variety are currently in production.
The vineyard was planted between 2000 and 2001 and the first vintage was 2004. Soils have some slate and the yields are very low.
Only 12,000 bottles are produced, almost all of which are sold in the archipelago. The range includes two wines. Favaritx (€14 in Spain), named after a nearby lighthouse, is fermented in stainless steel tanks. Sa Cudia (€26), fermented and aged in oak barrels, is more serious and structured.
