Is it possible to adapt an early ripening variety like Tempranillo to the Mediterranean character of Rioja Oriental? Javier Arizcuren works with early harvests, little extraction and the addition of late ripening grapes (Garnacha and Mazuelo) to obtain a rich palette of nuances (herbal notes, black pepper, juicy fruit) plus some nerve and flavour. A top class entry-level wine made in limited quantities and with a price tag well above the average that adds much-needed value to this area. 16.5 points
