The unconventional idea of blending grapes from Sierra de Gata in Extremadura and Villanueva de Alcardete (Toledo) and ageing the resulting wine under a veil of yeasts (flor) works surprisingly well, possibly as a result of the harmonising role of the ageing process. With a Sherry-like nose and moderate alcohol, the wine’s acidity feels slightly higher, yet Mélangé stands out for its length and chalky character on the finish. An affordable rarity. 16.5 points
