In 2017 frost took away 10% of the vintage whereas drought took an additional 30%. There are a couple of slight changes on the label: the brand name appears in larger letters and the acronym VLAV has been added. In tune with Oliván’s rebel character, it stands for “free wine from the hamlet of Viñaspre”. The wine smells of ripe red fruit, grape skins and liquorice over a toasty background. This is a flavorful, honest wine offering a pure expression of the vintage. A terroir-driven Rioja. 91 points
