Diego de Lorenzo has spent most of his 20-year career in hospitality in Fuerteventura, where he owned an Italian restaurant. He has now fulfilled his dream of embarking on a wine venture, giving free rein to a passion that has grown over the years and been fuelled by numerous trips to wine regions, mainly in Italy. One wine in particular, made a lasting impression: a cuvée from Etna in Sicily made by Frank Cornelissen.
After considerable effort, he has brought together 40 abandoned plots that once formed part of an estate in Puntagorda, in the north of La Palma. His aim is to recreate the casina, the traditional agricultural estate found around Milan. The property covers five hectares, including two hectares of vineyards, with scope for further planting. It also includes an old vine plot of Listán Blanco, olive trees, a vegetable garden, all farmed organically, and livestock. The soils are predominantly red clay, with a depth of around 70 cm.
The new vineyards were planted ungrafted in the late 2010s using vine cuttings sourced from local growers who treat their vines respectfully. De Lorenzo has focused particularly on Vijariego Negro, in response to climate change, as well as less common varieties such as Listán Prieto and Baboso Negro. He also grows the island’s traditional varieties, such as the whites Albillo Criollo – a staple of high-elevation vineyards in the north of the island – and Listán Blanco, as well as the red Negramoll. Syrah is the estate’s only international variety.
The first vintage was 2022, with a modest production of 2,500 bottles. By 2025, this figure had risen to 10,000 bottles. Until that vintage, none of the wines saw wood, with ageing taking place in ceramic amphorae or ovoid fibre tanks. For now, the wines are produced at third-party facilities, although the aim is to build a winery on the property itself.
Los vinos
The range starts with Chubasco (1,000 bottles), an original and expressive pét-nat made from Negramoll, with a delightful burst of fruit on the finish. The grapes are sourced from a century-old vineyard belonging to Antonio 'el Ratón', La Palma's first organic grower.
Sendero is the flagship brand for estate’s blends and is made both in white and red versions. The proportions of the different varieties may vary from vintage to vintage depending on the harvest conditions, particularly in the white, which features Listán Blanco (almost entirely from old vines), Albillo Criollo and Vijariego Blanco as the main varieties, plus 7–8% Malvasía. The 2024 vintage (around 1,500 bottles) is floral and unctuous. The red wine (around 2,000 bottles) is slightly warm yet herbal and easy drinking. It is a blend of Listán Prieto, Vijariego Negro, Listán Negro and Negramoll in order of presence.
There is also an interesting, energetic and lively Vijariego Negro sold under the Amagante brand, with only 400 bottles produced. A similar quantity is made of Herético, a far more concentrated red due to the high proportion of Syrah, lifted by a refreshing 15% of Vijariego Negro. The 100% Syrah Oveja Negra, aged in ceramic amphorae, is meatier and deeper. The 2025 vintage will also see the launch of a white Herético, also aged in amphorae and made from Albillo Criollo.
