Mas Escorpí

Named after the estate from which Gramona sources grapes for this project, Mas Escorpí is the brand that represents the house's still wines. The property features the iconic terroirs of Penedès, with clay-sandy soils intermixed with marine sediments and alluvial stones. Like the family’s renowned Corpinnat sparkling wines, all vineyards are farmed biodynamically with maximum respect for the environment.

The vineayard area extends from the vicinity of the Anoia river, at about 100 metres elevation, to 350 metres at the highest point of the estate. Whilst the sea breezes temper the climate and result in healthy grapes, the imposing Montserrat mountain serves as a barrier against the cold winds blowing in from the Pyrenees.

Traditional and indigenous grape varieties like Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Malvasía de Sitges are grown next to international grapes, mainly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which were planted as a result of the expertise gained in different parts of the world by the fifth generation.

As they work biodynamically, the Gramonas have created a true farm among vineyards with hens, cows, sheep that help to keep green covers under control and horses that till the land. While falcons contribute to enrich the ecosysten, bees foster pollination. A great deal of the work in the farm is aimed at having spongy, loose soils rich in microbial life. All wines are biodynamically certified by Demeter since 2014 and Biodyvin, which is specific to the wine industry, since 2018.

The wines are grouped in two different ranges: Heritage for indigenous varieties and Inspiration for international grapes. Heritage includes Font-Jui Xarel.lo (€14, 5,500 bottles), a barrel fermented white that is aged for three months on 300-litre barrels. Grapes are sourced from the eponymous vineyard with southeast exposure and planted on clay-limestone soils. La Maca (€13, 6,700 bottles) is a Macabeo sourced from a plot of under one hectare and grown on clay-silt soils. The wine is fermented in seasoned barrels.

The Inspiration range is made of four varietal wines, three whites and one red. Mas Escorpí Chardonnay (€12, 7,000 bottles) is a blend of several plots and is fermented in stainless steel tanks. There are also the barrel fermented Savinat Sauvignon Blanc (16,500 bottles, €18) and Pinoteamo (€18, 4,500 bottles), an original blend of Pinot Noir (605) vinified as a blanc de noirs with equal proportions of Pinot Blanc and Pinot gris. Finally, Bru Pinot Noir (€23, 2,300 bottles) is fermented in oak vats and aged in 300-litre barrels for eight months.
