Marañones

Located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, a village in Gredos within the province of Madrid, the winery was founded by J. Fernando Cornejo, a lawyer, sociologist and businessman, but has been part of the Alma Carraovejas group since 2021. The progress of these wines since their launch in the 2000s has been remarkable,  driven in large part by the work of winemaker Fernando García, one of the two partners behind Comando G. Javier Blasco, who also oversees Ossian Vides y Vinos, is currently in charge of winemaking.

The character of the mountain vineyards scattered around the village of San Martín de Valdeiglesias comes through in all the wines, from the Garnacha-based reds to the Albillo Real whites. The Syrah used in the early days has been phased out to avoid the heavy, candied fruit notes that tended to mask Garnacha’s floral, red fruited, earthy and mineral aromas.

The estate farms 30 hectares of 40- to 80-year-old bush vines on granite hills at elevations ranging from 650 to 850 metres. The main vineyard, which gives its name to the project, is Marañones. Plots such as Picuenco and Peña Alta, destined for the winery’s top wines, lie amongst olive trees and forests of holm oak, oak and pine. Other vineyard sites include Andrinoso, Peña Cruzada and Dehesa. Biodynamic certification was obtained in 2025.

Vinification is done separately, with indigenous yeasts and including stems for the reds and the wines are aged in large French oak barrels (500 to 700 litres) and foudres.

The wines

All the wines are produced in very small quantities. The range follows a Burgundian-inspired approach, comprising village, site or lieu-dit and single vineyard wines. The entry-level red is 30,000 Maravedíes (13,000 bottles, €20), an excellent introduction to Garnacha from San Martín de Valdeiglesias.

Marañones (24,000 bottles, €28) is the lieu-dit red. The grapes come from 50- to 70-year-old Garnacha plots on the site of the same name. The single-vineyard Peña Caballera (2,500 bottles, €40) comes from a 1.5-hectare of old-vine Garnacha located on the upper part of the Marañones vineyard at 850m elevation. Thanks to its north orientation, grapes ripen slowly.

The labels were redesigned with the 2022 vintage and there are some changes in the white range. Picarana was renamed Marañones (20,000 bottles, €31) while Pies Descalzos (2,500 bottles, €67) now takes the name of the site it comes from: Peña Cruzada. The 2023 vintage saw the release of Picuenco (1,200 bottles, €72), a new single-vineyard Albillo with a distinctly saline profile. It comes from a plot sitting at 850m, the highest point of the Marañones estate, on a north-facing slope near Peña Caballera.
