Most of Spain's wine-producing areas are already immersed in the grape harvest, with an initial forecast of lower quantities but generally good quality. On the more leisurely side of wine, the traditional grape harvest festivals and tastings in the usual venues are starting again.

Saturdays and Sundays in September. Around two dozen wineries in Penedès hold La Verema del Cava with a variety of activities such as concerts outdoor micro theatres, brunch and lunch among the vines, dinners under the stars, tastings and children's activities. The participating wineries are Alta Alella, Canals & Munné, Carles Andreu, Cava Guilera, Caves Bolet, Celler Joan Segura Pujadas, Celler Kripta, Codorníu, Covides, Giró del Gorner, Giró Ribot, Jovani Vins, Juve & Camps, Masia Torreblanca, Miquel Pons, Pagès Entrena, Rovellats, Sumarroca, Vilarnau and Vins el Cep. 1,7 and 28 September. Music, wine, architecture and the landscape are the central elements of Festival Terrer Priorat, featuring tastings led by Ruth Troyano, Audrey Doré, Anna Vicens, Joan Asens and Toni Bru. Click on the link to see prices and timetables. 

1-30 September. The Empordà Wine Route, in association with some wineries in the area, presents several activities this month such as exploring the heritage of post-war bunkers with architect Adela Geli and La Cooperativa de Garriguella, wine tastings at Clos d'Agón, Martín Faixó and Espelt, walk and tasting in the vineyards of Paraje Olivardots, wine tasting on a boat along the Costa Brava, wine and book tasting and pairings with oil, cheese, chocolate and music.

3, 5, 11, 12, 19 and 20 September. Vila Viniteca presents several tastings this month. At its Barcelona venues there will be an introductory session with Rioja wines (3rd, €65), Argentine wines (5th, €69), Mendoza wines (12th, €49), Mediterranean wines (19th, €65) and a journey through the Rhone (20th, €75). All tastings are at Agullers 7, except the Mendoza tasting, which is at Villarroel 209, and the Argentinian wine tasting, which is at Illa Diagonal. In Madrid the following tastings will take place: rare varieties (General Díaz Porlier 45, 11th, €49) and heroic viticulture (Fernán González, 29, 19th, €49). Time: 20:00

5-7 September. The harvest festival in Aranda de Duero celebrates its 7th edition with various activities such as a popular tasting of Ribera del Duero wines awarded in the Envero Awards and a premium tasting of eight wines from different areas of Ribera del Duero. There will also be live concerts, variety performances and puppet shows.

6, 14, 15 and 28 September. Vin La Vie in Madrid (Mercado Ibiza, local 8) is organising several activities this month: Albariza soils with Pérez Barquero paired with Iberico products (6th, €29), the Seisdedos wine project in the Sierra de Salamanca (14th, €28), presentation of the microbodega Doble de Pérez in Jumilla (15th, €30) and presentation of the Loli Casado winery in Rioja Alavesa (28th, €37). 7 September. Producers Abeica, Alonso González, Eduardo Garrido, Fernández Eguiluz, Puelles, Real Divisa, Ruiz del Portal, Solabal and Solana de Ramírez present the 27th Open Door Day of Ábalos, La Rioja. The women's association in the village has organised cultural visits, grape treading in a stone wine press, a lecture by Salvador Velilla, tastings and musical entertainment, visits to wine cellars, a tourist train and snack stalls and food trucks. 7 September. As part of its 135th anniversary celebrations, the barrel room at Finca Valpiedra winery in Fuenmayor (La Rioja) offers a concert by pianist Iván Martín followed by a dinner with the estate's wines. 7-8 September. The town of Montemayor (Córdoba) prepares Europe's largest pasera where visitors can learn more about the process of drying the Pedro Ximénez grapes in the sun and the artisan process of making sweet wine. Additionally, there will be workshops for adults and children, music, bicycle trips along the vineyard, and tasting of Montilla-Moriles wines. Location: Montemayor Fair Center.

8 September. The Dominio de Casalta estate is holding an open day coinciding with the harvest with a showroom featuring almost 50 wines produced by the wineries of the Pepe Rodríguez de Vera group and lunch at the estate, located in Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón (Albacete, Carretera de Pétrola Km 3,2). 10, 17 and 24 September. If you are currently studying for the WSET Diploma or have a tasting level equivalent to a WSET 3, Artean Wines in Bilbao offers the possibility of improving your tasting technique by attending blind tasting sessions led by Teresa Guilarte, WSET Diploma and Master of Wine student. Six wines will be tasted in two blocks of three wines with a common thread. Duration: 17:30 - 20:30. Price: €85 per session (10% discount for all sessions). 11 and 18 September. This month, wine bar Tiempos Líquidos in Burgos (San Gil, 5) presents a couple of wine tastings. The first, led by Diego González, co-owner and sommelier, is called ‘Back to School’ and includes a comparative tasting of new varieties from around the world ( 11th, €45), while Toni Pérez presents a tasting of sparkling wines from Gramona, a house with more than 100 years of history, with wines ranging from Imperial to Enoteca 2011, with a final surprise (18th, €60). 12, 17, 22 and 26 September. Sommelier Pilar Cruces hosts several activities this month with her Lust for Wine club. The first, on the 12th, is a session about Sicily (20:30, €45), which will be repeated on 26th at La Pícara Gastroteca, in Aranda de Duero (20:30, €35). On the 17th she presents ‘Te leo un Vino’ at Musica y Deportes (Paseo del Espolón, 16, Burgos; 19:30, €8. Bookings on +34 638 66 14 08). On the 22nd, Pilar will lead a blind tasting of Spanish whites at Lust for Wine (Plaza Alonso Martínez, 7A, Office 57, Burgos, 35 €) while on the 28th she will take the same activity to La Pícara Gastroteca, in Aranda de Duero (35 €). 13-14 September. The first internacional premium Rioja wine fair takes place in the Centro de la Cultura del Rioja and Paseo del Espolón in Logroño with a selection of wines from Arizcuren, Franco Españolas, Bilbaínas, Fernández Eguíluz, Las Orcas, Ilurce or Vivanco, among others, pintxos, artisan products and music. 13-15 September. The fifth edition of Mahasti Artean Festival, which combines culture, gastronomy, sport and nature, comes to Gorbeialdea, a region with incredible landscapes. Held in two vineyards in Usansolo and Dima, the festival includes concerts by Gari & Maldanbera and Lorelei Green, comedy by The Wine Up Comedy, top quality food by Restaurante Garena, yoga and pairings with txakolis from Bizkaia. 14 September. Finca Villacreces in Ribera del Duero celebrates the arrival of the grape harvest with Villacreces Sunset, an evening to enjoy two glasses of wine (Pruno and Finca Villacreces), a tasting of Iberico cured meats and listen to live music by Wine Notes, a cover band that plays pop and rock band that will cover pop and rock songs in Spanish and English. Time: 18:30 - 21:00 Price: €30

14 September. The Poboleda Grape Harvest and Wine Festival takes place in this Catalan village with an old-fashioned grape harvest with mules and carts, followed by a popular breakfast, the treading of the grapes, castellers, food trucks and a wine auction, among other activities.

15 September. Rioja Alavesa hosts its 29th Harvest Festival in the village of Moreda with wine tastings, music, pelota matches, stands with local products, children’s activities and a popular lunch for everyone who wants to join. There will be a shuttle service from Bilbao, San Sebastián and Vitoria. Time: From 11:00

Until 15 September. Jerez’s Harvest Festival or Fiesta de la Vendimia starts with the traditional foot-treading of the grapes and continues throughout the first half of the month with numerous wine-related activities including a guided tour of the old town accompanied by wine served with a venencia and chicharrones (pork rinds), an exhibition of paintings on the Andalusian bodeguero dog, the Blind Tasting Challenge in Teams organised by the Jerez Wine Society, wine tasting of Valdespino wines, guided visits to the vineyards of Williams & Humbert, the Cayetano del Pino winery and several coopers, conferences, flamenco, a children's venencia competition and master tastings by the appellation's bodegas at the Alcázar, among many other activities. 16 September. The tasting season at Taberna der Guerrita, a summer classic for wine lovers, comes to an end in Sanlúcar de Barrameda with a Wine War organised by Armando Guerra and his team. Time: 21:00 More information on info@tabernaderguerrita.com

17, 19 and 24 September. Enoteca Barolo in Madrid (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) presents three tastings this month. The first belongs to the series Crazy about Champagne, with the possibility of tasting sparkling wines such as Krug, Cristal or Dom Pérignon and other legends of the area (17th, €140). On the 19th there will be a pairing of French cheeses with world wines led by Tomás Asensio Levy (€55) while on the 24th there will be the first part of the introductory wine tasting course in four sessions (€150).

19 SeptemberCastillo de Ygay, Marqués de Murrieta's founding winery and museum on the outskirts of Logroño, opens its doors to the opera to celebrate 'The Melody of Wine'. Capellanía 2019, Marqués de Murrieta 2019 and Primer Rosé 2023 will each be accompanied by a musical performance and gourmet snacks prepared by the bodega's chef. A guided tour of the cellar and the Marqués de Murrieta Museum will be offered beforehand. Time: 19:00-21:30 Price: €145

19 September. Restaurant Entrevins in Valencia (La Paz, 7) presents a tasting of wines by Bierzo producer César Márquez, with the following 2022 cuvées paired with tapas: La Salvación, Sufreiral, Pico Ferreira and Rapolao. Time: 20:30 Price: €44 Bookings by email: v.entrevins@entrevins.es

21 and 28 September. The Territorio Luthier winery celebrates the harvest with music, wine and food. On its terrace in Paraje La Rastrilla (Aranda de Duero) visitors can listen to gospel with Spirit to All on the 21st, while on the last Saturday of the month Yonta Groove will entertain the evening with rock music. 22 September. The gardens of producer Mesquida Mora in Mallorca host a Wine Truck where you will be able to taste wines by the glass of four of the most interesting winegrowers in the island such as Soca-Rel, Can Majoral, 4 Kilos and Bárbara Mesquida. 23 September. The Rioja Association of Bodegas for Quality (ABC) is holding its first wine tasting in Madrid. The Sala de las Columnas of the Círculo de Bellas Artes will be the venue for the presentation of some of its finest wines. Given the background and commitment to quality of its members, it is well worth a visit: Bodegas Valdemar, Castillo de Cuzcurrita, Contino, Cvne, Gómez Cruzado, La Rioja Alta, Martínez Lacuesta, Miguel Merino, Muga, Valenciso and Viña Real. 23 September. "Spain through its wines" is the title of the tasting that will take place at Vinology Madrid (Conde de Aranda, 11) led by Pilar Oltra, owner of the restaurant, and María José Huertas, sommelier at restaurant Paco Roncero. The tasting will be accompanied by a menu with eight dishes. Time: 19:00 - 22:00 Price: €120

24 September. In their endeavour to spread wine culture, Jorge Sibaritastur and Felipe, owner of Las Rías in Gijón, present a blind tasting of six white wines designed for those who consider whites to be "minor" wines and for anyone who wants to understand the different wine profiles. Lugar: Las Rías (Poeta Alfonso Camín, 10). Time: 19:30 Price: €43

26 September. The gardens at Sabaté i Coca in Vilafranca del Penedès are the setting for the third edition of Nit de Verema Corpinnat, an occasion to enjoy more than 30 sparkling wines from the dozen wineries of the collective brand, accompanied by an informal dinner prepared by chef Oriol Llavina of the restaurant El Cigró d'Or. 28 September. The first Fiesta de la Vendimia at Raíces Ibéricas will take place at Maluenda (Calatayud) and includes a tasting of wines, pinchos, grape treading competition, presentation of a mural by graffiti artist Vera Galindo on the winery's tanks and a live gig by Puro Relajo.
