The start of June is full of freshness and bubbles with the daily Champagne tastings available for madrileños and visitors at Enoteca Barolo during most of the summer. Wine lovers heading north can choose between two very different events: A Emoción dos Viños in Tui (Galicia) will gather leading vignerons and small producers from Spain’s northwest and beyond while Haro dresses in white to welcome thousands of visitors who are expected to arrive at the Rioja town for the infamous Wine Battle.

1 June - 15 August. Wine enthusiasts in Madrid who have to spend at least part of the summer in the city can get some welcome respite from the usual heat at Enoteca Barolo's daily Champagne tastings (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) with prices ranging between €7 and €10 for two glasses. Barolo’s Champagne Calendar will list the brands offered daily, which include names such as Tarlant and Bollinger, Pol Roger and Veuve Clicquot, Jacqueson 736 and Delamotte, and up to 70 combinations. 2 June. Rioja is undoubtedly Spain’s most famous wine region with new names gradually joining the list of producers who settled in the area over 100 years ago. La Vinacoteca de Barcelona (Valencia, 595) has prepared a tasting that combines traditional wines and old vintages with new style wines which are hard to taste for their price tag or unavailability. This is the line-up of DOCa Rioja wines set to be tasted: Marqués de Riscal Reserva 1960; Allende Blanco 2010; Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Blanco 2014; Viña Albina Reserva 1975; Rioja Alta Viña Arana Reserva 70, Palacios Remondo Propiedad 2010; Sierra Cantabria Amancio 2010; Artadi El Carretil 2012 and Carmen Gran Reserva 2008. 4 June. Logroño holds the ninth edition of Riojano, Joven y Fresco (Young and Fresh Rioja) to encourage young people to drink responsibly. Over 30 producers will be present at the event. For €7, partygoers will receive a screen-printed wine glass and five tokens to exchange for wine as well as tapas and dishes made with local products. 4-14 June. Famous Wine Festival (FWF) links culture, art, artists and wine. It takes place in many shops and businesses around Avilés (Asturias) where wines from famous people such as Andrés Iniesta, Custo Dalmau, Fran Rivera, Leo Messi, David Bowie, AC/DC, George Clooney or Antonio Banderas can be tasted. Each tasting costs between two and five euros and they will be paired with local cheeses. Additionally, on June 9th there will be a free screening of Sideways, the world's most famous wine film.
5 June. For the second consecutive year, La Vinoteca in Mallorca holds La Magia del Bodeguero, a smaller version of Barcelona retailer Quim Vila’s tasting known as "La Música del vino”. This event, which will take place at Iberostar Son Antem Hotel in the town of Llucmajor (Mallorca), will gather 100 Spanish top producers such as Peter Sisseck, Telmo Rodríguez, Álvaro and Rafael Palacios, the Eguren brothers and wineries like Valenciso, Zárate, Rodríguez Mendez, Mauro, Finca Los Arandinos, AT Roca and Ossian among many others. 6-7 June. Palacio de Quintanar in Segovia hosts the Fiesta de los Champagnes Auténticos with the presence of some Spanish Champagne experts like Jordi Melendo and Joan Gómez Pallarés. Attendants will be able to able to take part in a vertical tasting of Terre Natale (Hure Freres) and two masterclasses as well as enjoy the Champagne Fiesta with live music and a cheese tasting led by Rubén Valvuena, cheese maker at Granja Cantagrullas. 8 June. Under the heading “Wine’s Capital Sins”, Barcelona’s Outlook Wine school organises a seminar focused on identifying wine faults, as well as recognising them during tastings. Antonio Palacios, winemaking professor at La Rioja’s University, will lead the workshop. He will review which faults originate in the vineyard, during alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and during oak maturation, with a wine tasting exam at the end. 8 June. Alicante's Archaeology Museum holds the Winecanting Summer Festival, an event organised by the Alicante Appellation. There will be around 25 local wineries presenting their wines such as the new Monastrell varietals by El Sequé (Rioja producer Artadi's project in the Mediterranean) or those from Vins del Comtat. Wines will be paired with some food brought by local shops. Entrance is free but €5 tickets are on sale and include a glass and three tastings. 8 June. Fritz Michael Wöhr is founding partner at Vins Alemanys and one of the leading importers of German wines in Spain. He will travel to Pontevedra (northwestern Spain) today to present at Vinoteca Bagos (Michelena, 20) a small selection of wines from the 2012 vintage with different producers and vilification methods. 11 June. Laura Carrera, former researcher at Spain's Centre of Scientific Investigations (CSIC), presents a tasting at Bodega Urbana in Bilbao which will be paired with an unusual ingredient: flowers. Eadable fresh and crystalized flowers will be paired with red and white wines selected by Ana Martín, winemaker at Bodega Urbana (Gran Vía, 66). The range goes from garden aromas (basil flowers), to roses, citrus, aniseed, geranium, liquorice, fennel, celery, orange blossom, spray carnations and the mysterious electric flower. 11 June. The second activity of Enocións by Ribeiro aims to establish links between the wines of Galicia’s oldest appellation and the Camino de Santiago (Pilgrims’ Way). At Centro Gaiás de la Cidade da Cultura de Galicia, Pepe Solla, owner of Casa Solla restaurant (1 Michelin star), will cook some tapas to transport diners to the Camino’s aromas, colors and flavours. The food will be paired with Ribeiro wines and the music of DJ Analis. Time: 19:00 Price: €12. 12 June. The recently launched Centro de la Cultura del Rioja in Logroño (Mercaderes, 9) has prepared a series of special activities to celebrate San Bernabé, the city's local fiesta. The day will commence at 13:30 with a tasting of four Rioja wines from consecutive vintages (€12) and will be followed by two free sessions of wine and chillout music with DJ Félix Ramírez and the short film La Cúpula del Rioja. 12-14 June. La Calle en Rosa travels to Málaga to promote rosé wines from DO Navarra, which are made by bleeding the must. Over 60 bars in the centre of the city will be decorated in pink and will serve rosés from Navarra. the launch of La Calle en Rosa will take place on June 12 on Larios street, and there will be music on the street. 12-14 June. This weekend the DO Tarragona organizes Tarragona's 17th Wine Fair (Fira del Vi), with the presence of around twenty wineries such as Adernats, De Muller or Celler Suñer, among others, and vermouth producers of famous brands like Yzaguirre and Miró. The event will take place at the city's Rambla Nova and there will be wine tasting courses for beginners as well as bands playing jazz. 13 June. A good opportunity to try some Oloroso wines which are not usually available in large stores or restaurants is brought to you by Jerez restaurant Tapaolé, which hosts a tasting with the following Oloroso sherries: La Cigarrera from Bodegas La Cigarrera (Sanlúcar de Barrameda); La Garrocha from Bodegas Grant (El Puerto de Santa María); Sangre y Trabajadero from Bodegas Gutiérrez Colosía (El Puerto de Sta. 15 June. Andrés Conde, owner of restaurant La Cigaleña in Santander, boasts one of the best wine lists in that northern Spanish city. He travels to Barcelona to present a tasting with old wines brought from his own cellar at Bar Brutal (Barra de Ferro, 1), a popular place specialized in natural wines. "Free wine travels well, ages well and grows next to the sea", says Andrés, who will uncork bottles from the Loire, Alsace, Jura, Saboye and will challenge attendants to guess the vintage of a Clos Rougeard!. 16 June. Basque distributor Mikel Foronda (Portal de Arriaga, 50, Vitoria) presents a vertical tasting of manzanilla en rama Sacristía AB led by Antonio Barbadillo Mateos. Aged for 8-10 years under flor, this manzanilla comes from six different sacas (drawing the wine off the cask). There will also be a chance to taste three criaderas of this wine, stored at Bodegas Francisco Yuste in the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. An aperitif will be served after the tasting. 17 June. Fernando Mora is a young producer from Zaragoza who is also studying to become Master of Wine. He started to work with wine about a decade ago, making his own artisan wines in Valdejalón, a little known region between Cariñena, Campo de Borja and Calatayud. The tasting of Valdejalón wines will be held at Essencia Wine Bar in San Sebastián (Zabaleta, 42) and will end with some nibbles being served to pair with the wines. 17 June. Gregorio Martínez is a relatively new winery located in Nalda (Rioja Alta). The estate, at 626 metrres above sea level, has around 32 hectares planted with Tempranillo, Mazuelo and a little bit of Viura. 18 June. The association of independent producers Roca Madre organizes a small fair in Lavinia (Ortega y Gasset, 16, Madrid). There will be a chance to taste wines from small vignerons such as Albamar (Rías Baixas), Akilia (Bierzo), Almaroja (Arribes del Duero), Altos de San Esteban (V.T. 19 June. A popular tasting of the winners in the sixth Ecovino Awards, which aim to encourage organic wine consumption, will take place at Riojaforum Logroño (San Millán, 25). The winning wines will be revealed on 3 June and will be available for tasting at the event. 20 June. The glass lookout with spectacular views of the vineyards surrounding Bodegas Baigorri in Samaniego (Rioja Alavesa) will hold several yoga sessions in the morning to welcome the summer solstice. 24 June. Conca del Barberá has led the way in recovering and planting Trepat. Unión Española de Catadores (Lope de Vega, 27, Madrid) has organized a tasting of wines made with this variety, both sparkling -as it is better known- and red styles. Led by Juanma Ruiz Casado, the tasting will include wines from producers such as Agustí Torelló Mata, Castillo Perelada, Mas Tinell, Sánstrave, Adernats, Molí del Capellanes, Gran Clos Montblanc and Succes La Cuca de Llum. 24 June. Roberto Oliván is a thirty-something winegrower who works with 7.5 hectares of vines in Viñaspre in Rioja Alavesa. Vineyards are located at high altitude with distinctive limestone and sandstone soils which provide a unique character to his Tentenublo wines. Today he will travel to Bilbao to present his project and wines at Cork (Licenciado Poza, 45), where wine lovers will have a chance to taste his new and rare txakoli from Álava called Udico 2014 as well as his Rioja range which includes Tentenublo Blanco 2014, Xerico 2014, Tentenublo 2013, Escondite del Ardacho 2013 and El Abundillano. 26 June. In 1999 Javier Zaccagnini set up Bodegas Aalto along with Mariano García with the aim to make a great wine coming from old vines and old Tinta Fina clones aided by the experience accumulated by both winemakers during their careers. To explain the project and talk about the wines they make in Ribera del Duero, Bodega Santa Cecilia in Madrid (Blasco de Garay, 74) has organized a tasting and workshop with Javier Zaccagnini with a chance to taste the following wines: PS 2006, 2009, 2010 and Aalto 2007, 2009, 2010 and as a novelty Zaccagnini will bring Aalto 2014 straight from the barrel. 26 June. Wine retailer DeVinum (Avenida de Portugal, 183) in Salamanca presents a wine tasting with Altolandón led by winemaker Rosalía Molina. The winery, part of the DO Manchuela, makes organic wines and is located at an altitude of around 1.,000 metres on the Cuenca mountains. 27 June. DO Txakoli de Getaria moves away for a few kilometres to Boulevard Donostia in San Sebastian, the capital of Gipuzkoa, to present wines from 27 wineries in the appellation. Being in the Basque Country, pintxos are almost compulsory so there will be a chance to try one made with anchovies and another one with Idiazabal cheese. Time: 11:30 - 14:30
27-28 June. A Emoción dos Viños is a fair where small producers from different Spanish regions gather to show their wines, which transmit their origin and are grown with a sustainable philosophy both in the vineyards and in the way they are marketed. It is a great opportunity to know the producers behind these wines, men and women who are at the forefront of small projects in Galicia, and different regions of Spain and Portugal such as Xose Lois Sebio, Bernardo Estévez, Alberto Nanclares, Dominique Roujou, Ramiro Ibáñez or Fredi Torres, among others. 29 June. Every year on this date Haro holds its traditional Battle of Wine with around 10,000 people marching up to the fields of San Felices, on the outskirts of this Rioja town, with one thing in mind: to throw as much wine to each other as possible -130,000 litres last year. The Battle of Wine, as it is known, starts with a mass early in the morning and finishes with a popular lunch. Thousands of young locals attend but the fiesta is increasingly enjoyed by foreign tourists, mostly from Australia and the US. Further details about the fiesta on this link.
