One of the historic wineries of Ribera del Duero. Confident of the quality of the family vineyard planted by their father Mauro, in 1980 the Pérez Pascuas brothers, Benjamín and Adolfo, produced their first harvest. Two years later, in 1982, they were part of the small group of wineries that founded the DO.
The winery is located in Pedrosa de Duero (Burgos), a municipality that encompasses renowned names such as Bodegas Rodero and Pago de los Capellanes, and that also lends its name to the winery’s most emblematic brand: Viña Pedrosa. This is the home of vineyards such as Valtarreña, 850 metres above sea level, where the region’s typical contrast between day and night temperatures becomes even more pronounced.
Hnos. Pérez Pascuas is a family business, currently managed by the second generation. The vineyard has been growing over the years and now totals 145 hectares, almost all Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), as is common in Ribera, with a high percentage of vines around 30 years old, ensuring that the wines have structure and character. The wines typically present clean fruit, well-measured ageing and an excellent balance of alcohol and acidity that invites a second taste. These are reds that show the region’s characteristic profile, but also lack excesses of ripeness and have a great capacity for developing in the bottle.
The winery produces around 550,000 bottles each year. Having spent 18 months ageing in French and American oak, Viña Pedrosa Crianza (€17) is the winery’s flagship brand, accounting for 45% of its production. This is followed in volume by Cepa Gavilán Cri-anza (12 months in oak; €10); with around 190,000 bottles being produced each year, this is a wine with a great quality-price relationship. Third in production volume, with 55,000 bottles, is Viña Pedrosa Reserva (24 months in oak; €30), one of the most serious and long-lived Reservas of the appellation, which includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend.
The single-vineyard red Finca La Navilla (20 months in French oak; 30,000 bottles; €22), takes the name of the vineyard it comes from, located on the same plot as the win-ery. This is the wine in which the Pérez Pascuas consider that their Tinto Fino clone reaches its maximum expression. Much more exclusive, Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva (24 months in French and American oak; 15,000 bottles; €60) also includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to the Tinto Fino. Finally, top of the range Pérez Pascuas Gran Selección (26 months in French and American oak; 5,500 bottles; €190) is a single-vineyard wine from 70-year-old vines in Pago Valtarreña that were planted by the grandfather of the current generation, Mauro Pérez. It is only produced in exceptional years and regularly features among Spain’s best reds.
Hnos. Pérez Pascuas wines are now available in over 35 countries. The winery is open to visitors and benefits from facilities for celebrating events and meals, with capacity for 120 people.
