Thousands of manzanilla, fino and other fortified wines will be poured this week to celebrate International Sherry Week with events across the world on the first week of November. Aside from these activities to promote these wonderful little known wines, there are plenty more events for wine lovers across Spain. Check our agenda throughout the month for updates!
3 November. Wine merchant Mikel Foronda in Vitoria (Portal de Arriaga, 50) hosts a tasting of sherries from Bodegas Tradición such as their Fino plus VORS Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, Cream, Pedro Ximénez and a little surprise brought from Jerez. 3 November. Espai Penedès in Barcelona (Muntaner, 21) has planned a tasting of wines with different origins aimed to be guessed by participants. Duero, Rioja, Burdeos, Toscana, Hungría, Chile and Penedès are the areas where these wines come from, which will be paired with five different kinds of cheese from around the world. 3-13 November. The sixth edition of Catalonia's Most Festival in Penedès features some very interesting films about vineyards, wine and cava culture. On this occasion, films and shorts will be screened at different locations, including some wineries such as Celler Pardas, Gramona or Freixenet, among others and they will be followed by cheese and wine tastings. Tickets can be purchased on the festival’s website with prices ranging between €5 and €30
4 November. Vinoteca Belostikale (Belostikale, 8) in Bilbao organizes a tasting of wines from Priorat and Montsant, two neighbouring regions with diverse soils and climates. Among the wines on the tasting you will find Más Baste 2012 (Pedro Ximenez, Garnacha Blanca), Vino de Villa, DOQ Priorat; Les Sorts 2011 (Garnacha Blanca) DO Montsant; Peites 2014 Vino de Villa, DOQ Priorat; Castell de les Pinyeres 2013 DO Montsant; Les Sorts Sycar 2013 DO Montsant y Les Sorts Vinyes Velles 2012. 4 November. Sommelier Luis Paladín travels south to Taberna der Guerrita in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Rubiños, 43) to present a tasting of wines from Galicia with an introduction to the various appellations, varieties and winemakers. Time: 20:30 Price: €15 Bookings on +34 697 826 096
6 November. For wine aficionados with young children, Bodegas Bohedal has prepared a wine painting workshop for kids so that the little ones can learn and enjoy their time in a winery while the parents taste the wines made by this family producer in Cuzcurrita (La Rioja). Price: Adults €10 and kids €4
7-13 November. Sherry Triangle wines celebrate their International Week with all kinds of events across the world in countries such as the US, Mexico, China, Brasil or Japan. The list of activities in Spain includes a tapas and Fino Tradición event with flamenco at Casa Patas in Madrid, a paired dinner with Galician dishes and sherry or a dinner at Madrid restaurant O Pazo de Lugo with wines by Williams & Humbert and the presence of winemaker Paola Medina. 8 November. Wine merchant Coalla in Gijón has invited Jesús Barquín, one of the members of Equipo Navazos, to present a tasting of historic wines from the series La Bota de… such as La Bota 30 de Manzanilla Pasada Capataz Rivas, La Bota 7 de Fino Macharnudo Alto Saca de Abril 2007 or La Bota 49 de Amontillado 100 RP. After the tasting there will be a dinner and post-dinner with six more Navazos wines (all of them in the market now, with three magnums) plus their brandy, rum and whisky. 9 November. Wine merchant Jovani & Vins in Barcelona (Comte Borrell, 30) presents a tasting of cavas by María Rigol, a small producer in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia focused on traditional blends and long aging periods. The wines will be paired with cheese. Time: 19:45 Price: €6 (members €5)
11 November. The Wine Place in Denia (Alicante) presents a blind tasting of four classic varieties: whites Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and reds Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Time: 18:00 - 20:00 Price: €15 Address: Restaurant Hoyo 19, La Sella Golf Resort, Alquería de Ferrando s/n, Jesus Pobre.
11 November. Toni Sarrión, winemaker at Bodegas Mustiguillo, will lead a tasting of his Pago El Terrerazo wines at Valladolid wine store El Buen Gusto (Manuel Silvela 2). This producer, based in the Valencia region, makes wines based on local varieties merseguera and bobal. The following will be available for tasting: La Garnacha 2015, Mestizaje 2015 white and red, Finca Calvestra 2015, Finca Terrerazo 2014 and Quincha Corral 2007. Time: 20:00 Price: €20
12 November. Tasta Porrera is a festival of wines and local cuisine organized by the Association of Producers from this Priorat enclave along with the town council as part of the town’s festivities. Starting at 11am attendants will be able to taste the wines and enjoy traditional food at the local bars. Special prices have also been announced for those interested in buying wine.
12 November. The second edition of Fiesta de los Champagnes Auténticos (Real Champagne Festival) returns to the medieval quarter of Segovia with a full day of tastings and the presence of some Champagne experts based in Spain such as Jordi Melendo, who will lead a tasting of “Champagnes to surprise” (€20) or Enrique García, who will present a select of iconic vintage champagnes (€100). As well as tastings, there will be a meal for all participants and a champagne fiesta to finish off the day. Die-hard champagne fans can purchase a day ticket for €90. Time: 11:00
14 and 28 November. After being in Bilbao last month, Experiencia Verema travels to Barcelona's Maritime Museum and, for the first time, to Vigo (28/11). Over 100 producers from various regions across Spain will have their wines ready for tasting as well as two led tastings with Finca Valpiedra from Rioja and the wines of the DO Ribeiro. Entrance is free but inscription is required on Verema’s website. Hours: 12:00 - 21:00
15 November. Rioja Alavesa winegrower and producer Roberto Oliván is behind a set of very personal wines which talk about terroir and a singular winemaking style. Today he wil be in Lavinia (Ortega y Gasset, 16) in Madrid to lead a horizontal tasting of his 2015 Escondite del Ardacho single-vineyard wines: El Abundillano, Veriquete, Las Paredes and Las Guillermas. He will also present his new project, called Los Corrillos. Time: 19:00 Price: €10
16 November. The new DOP Cebreros —2,000 hectares under vine in this region of Ávila, northwest of Madrid— is set to be launched soon so Enoteca Barolo (Príncipe de Vergara, 211, Madrid has invited some of its producers —Rubén Díaz (Rubor), Dani Ramos (Zerberos Finca), Rafa Mancebo (Alto Alberche), Juan Luis Beltrán (Hoyanko) and Alfonso Chacón (Canopy)— to explain their project and present their Garnacha and Albillo Real wines. 16 November. “Amontillado diversity and styles of Palo Cortado” is the interesting title of the tasting led by Pepe Ferrer, Sherry Wine Ambassador, in Essencia Wine Bar & Store in San Sebastián (Zabaleta, 42). 16 November.With the presence of three of its sommeliers, Vila Viniteca presents at restaurant Sagardi (Muntaner, 70-72) in Barcelona a blind tasting of five world wines to pair with a six-course menu. Time: 21:00 Price: €60.
17 November. Los Quesos de l'Amélie, a well-known, Madrid-based cheese merchant is celebrating the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau with a party that will be held in their premises in Torrecilla del Puerto, 5, Local 1. Wines will be paired with cheeses that match particularly well with this young French red wine, which is released worldwide on the third Thursday of November, Reservations are not accepted.
18 November. The Spanish Union of Tasters (UEC) holds its 30th anniversary with a tasting and gala dinner in Madrid with the presence of well-known producers such as María José López de Heredia, Antonio Flores, Álvaro Palacios, Carlos Falcó, Miguel Torres, Marisol Bueno), sommeliers (Guillermo Cruz, Custodio López Zamarra) and other wine trade professionals (Pedro Ballesteros MW, Andrés Proensa, among others). The meal will be prepared by chefs Paco Patón and Aurelio Morales, and will be paired with wines from Codorníu, González Byass, Pazo de Señorans, Raventós y Blanc, Palacios Remondo or Viña Pedrosa among others. The tasting will take place at Hotel Villareal (Plaza de las Cortes, 10) at 18:30 and costs €65 for members plus a guest (€80 for non members), while dinner will be served at 21:00 in Hotel Urban (Carrera de San Jerónimo, 34) and costs the same. For those wishing to join both events, there is a special price of €110 for members plus a guest (€140 non members)
19-20 November. Bodega Kirios de Adrada in the DO Ribera del Duero organizes an organic agriculture course aimed at wine professionals and aficionados who want to acquire basic skills about organic and sustainable wine growing and winemaking. The course includes a vertical tasting of Kirios de Adrada organic wines. Price: €120
21 November. Today’s tasting at El Mostrador de Vila Viniteca (General Díaz Porlier, 45) in Madrid will be an introduction to the red wines of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Led by sommelier David Martínez, the following wines will be tasted: François Carillon Saint-Aubin Les Pitangerets 2013, Lucien Le Moine Volnay Premier Cru Clos Des Chênes 2013, Morey-Blanc Aloxe Corton Premier Cru Clos du Chapitre 2010 , Pierre Morey Meursault Les Durots 2013, François Mikulski Pommard 2014, Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Les Lavières 2011 y Drouhin Beaune Premier Cru Grèves 2013. 24 November. Bodega Santa Cecilia (Blasco de Garay, 74) in Madrid has organized a tasting of wines from California led by the group’s winemaker José María Muñoz with the following selections: Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay 2013, McManis Petite Sirah 2014, Private Selection Zinfandel 2013, Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and Private Selection Pinot Noir 2012. 25 November. The Asociación de Amigos de la Vid y el Vino in the Madrid district of Alcobendas ( PSOE headquarters, Francisco Largo Caballero, 44) holds a vertical tasting of Conde de los Andes Gran Reserva, one of Rioja's classic wines whose bottles rest in the impressive ancient cellars of Ollauri, now owned by Bodegas Muriel. 28 November. Hotel Miguel Ángel in Madrid will host the Single Varietal Tasting Fair with a chance to taste wines from across Spain made with just one varietal. The event will also include the presentation at 13:30 horas of the guide Sin Mala Uva 2017 which is a compilation of this type of wines. Time: 12:00-21:00
28 November. Laura Lorenzo, from Daterra Viticultores, works three hectares under vine on the Bibei Valley, where she makes a range of wines (Azos, Gavela da Vila, Portela do Vento, Casas de Enriba…) which are generating an increasing number of admirers.
